Hole In The Wall is a bar & music venue situated in the heart of Kilkenny City. It is housed in the oldest surviving townhouse in Ireland – the 1582 Archer Inner House, 17 High St.
The Elizabethan building with its tavern, snug and Archer room has been fully restored and is the perfect setting for intimate gigs and jam sessions.
The Alternative Kilkenny Arts Festival is a voluntary run arts festival that was founded in 2014 by a group of artists and community organisers looking to bring together the scattered events and exhibitions that happen each August in Kilkenny and is in its 9th season.
It’s a wee bit funny that in the 28 years I’ve been travelling to Ireland, I’ve never been to Kilkenny until this year – the evening of 27 April, to be precise – when I arrived in the city to experience the 25th annual Kilkenny Roots Festival, something I’ve wanted to do for years but never got around to doing.
The weekend and the festival were brilliant, the city vibrant and full of music, so I decided to stay for a while and dissolve in its streets and alleyways. I ended up staying for four weeks, sleeping in my van in the car park down by the river, busking by day, soaking up the vibe at night and getting to know some of the locals.
I look forward to coming back and hopefully seeing a lot of Kilkenny Peeps that night!
